Sumo Wrestling

Sumo wrestling is a traditional Japanese martial art and sport that involves two competitors, known as rikishi, who face off in a circular ring called a dohyo. The objective is to force the opponent out of the ring or to make any part of their body, other than the soles of their feet, touch the ground. Sumo has a rich cultural heritage, with rituals and traditions that date back centuries, including ceremonial elements such as the purification of the ring and the wearing of distinctive mawashi (belts) by the wrestlers. The sport is characterized by its ceremonial aspects, strict rules, and classification system for athletes, which includes various ranks, the highest of which is yokozuna. Sumo is not only a physical contest but also a cultural expression, embodying values such as respect, discipline, and honor in Japanese society.
